I would expect you are probably OK for memory at the moment but it would be advisable to make sure you have 512 MB when you upgrade.

Performance is a combination of disk speed and CPU speed. Your disks are fine and there is no need to change these. I think the speed improvement with a dual-core 1.3 GHz CPU would be noticeable. Your rescan time might drop by about 2 to 3 minutes but I can't guarantee this.

The processor type can make a difference as well. Which NAS model are you considering?

Hi Simon,

I was thinking of upgrading to one of the following:
  • DS216j - CPU: Marvell Armada 385 88F6820 Dual Core 1 GHz; Memory: 512 MB DDR3
  • DS216 - CPU: Marvell Armada 385 88F6820 Dual Core 1.3 GHz; Memory: 512 MB DDR3
  • DS216play - CPU: STM STiH412 Dual Core 1.5 GHz; Memory: 1 GB DDR3

(Specs from Synology's UK site)

Any known issues with any of the above? (Well, will search the forum as well).

I only intend to use the NAS for music files.

Kind regards,
Peter
