I could not find a way for tagging my collection in a way that really satisfies me. For example: In classical music the concept of an album is not very helpful in most cases. You have a complete work, often consisting of more than one single track (may be a string quartet consists of the movements Adagio, Andante, Largo and Allegro), but then you have works with several parts and each part has several tracks (like Handel's Messiah and works like that). The title, album and group tags do not fit well for this kind of music. And it's the same with the artist tag. The artist would be for the ensemble, for example Dunedin Consort, and at the same time it is for John Butt as the conductor, and it is for soprano Susan Hamilton (which is co-leader too), and for all the other soloists, and it is for all the musicians of the orchestra plus the respective instruments (so that I could search for violin or cello and make a difference between solo violin and violin as a member of an ensemble). But the musicians of the ensemble should not be the same as the soloists, of course (but when looking for a special artist I have to find him no matter if he acts as a soloist in one work and only as a member of the orchestra in another work). You can't do that with the current tagging system. I have to live with it. So I have organized my classical collection in a simple folder structure (composer / subgenre / work / ensemble) that just fits the basic needs and not more, because otherwise I would be frustrated every day.
