I don't know why this would happen. It sounds like you have found a workable solution.

everything else is going brilliant best sound I have heard in my setup. I'm enjoying the use of plugplayer having lost that feature when I dropped Jriver a few years back.

JPlayStreamer only plays WAV streams and MinimStreamer currently doesn't support transcoding of AIFF to WAV. Do you need the files to be in AIFF format or could you convert them to Apple Lossless (ALAC)?

I will most likely convert the AIFF files to ALAC, thanks for the advice :-)
