A difference in CPU load on the NAS doesn't seem likely to make a difference to the music quality produced by the renderer. If this does make a difference, the reason must be that the extra CPU load on the NAS is making a difference to how the NAS transmits packets across the network to the renderer (e.g., packet sizes, retransmissions, window flow control, etc.).

My comment about different algorithms was intended as a reference to things like zero padding of 16-bit FLAC data to produce 24-bit WAV data.
