There might be a problem that is preventing the NAS from accessing the file on your computer. Could this be blocked by a firewall or an antivirus program? Can you try using another computer to do the manual install?

tried to no avail though. In parallel, I contacted Synology support and surprisingly, this is their response:

"Hello sir,
The DS212j don't support the Mimic server package. it was not developed for the DS212j platform, my test was yesterday in a DS214+. This is why it works, if your Nas could support this package, it will be available in the package center and you will not need a manual installation."

Does this ring a bell at all? would be very frustrating to say the least as I would not be able to use the NAS as intended.
