Life is simpler when using a Linn DS. I can mix and match any number of control points without problems.

Or when using BubbleUPnP Server to create an OpenHome renderer out of a standard UPnP renderer Smile.

Just in case: VLC based renderers can't play gaplessly, because VLC does not support preloading. (E.g. PSAudio PerfectWave DAC/Bridge case).

I would suffer from even greater mental confusion if I was trying to actively use two control points simultaneously! Smile

However, I was unsure if simply pressing Stop on one control point was enough before using the other control point.

On a more general note, I have never quite understood why the gapless playback issue ever reared its exceedingly ugly head. Why don't all players simply play the music as originally recorded?

David

I bought a player that does just that. Smile

Like you, I find it very surprising that other players have such difficulties with this. I believe the issues are

1) the UPnP AV specification doesn't include a mandatory protocol for enabling gapless playback

2) it is more difficult technically to merge the audio output from separate files gaplessly in the player

As of a few seconds ago, my Oppo BDP-105 also does gapless! Smile

I've just taken delivery of a 10m active USB cable that lets me use the asynchronous USB DAC input on the Oppo for the very first time. At present, this is the only gapless option on the Oppo, though I'm keen for them to deliver the promised firmware update that will also allow gapless via DLNA (which will enable me to make full use of my low power option of MinimServer on the NAS and control via BubbleUPnP).

As did I, and we both paid rather a lot of money for the privilege (and for some other benefits of course Smile). But, like the other David, I fail to understand how the industry ever thought that going backwards from what had been the norm with every other medium would ever be acceptable, at any price.

Your statement that the UPnP protocol makes no provision for gapless playback is rather mind boggling. Is such provision part of Linn's proposed extensions to the standard?

I said that the UPnP AV specification doesn't include a mandatory protocol for enabling gapless playback. There is an optional feature in the UPnP standard to enable this, but it's poorly specified and has been slow to be adopted.

Linn produced an extension to enable gapless playback many years ago. At this stage, it could not be described as a 'proposed' extension. This has also been slow to be adopted by other manufacturers.

Thank you. I take your points, but they do not reduce the boggle factor by much. The practical difference between the effect the standards are having and 'no provision' is not all that great. A clear and mandatory provision in the standard from the outset would have been a different matter ...
