I'm testing Linux Mint 21 and I met a strange behaviour of the icon applet
After the installation according to https://minimserver.com/install-linux-mwatch.html, the application behaves correctly but the icon appeared black in the applet panel. The content of the icon (gray/yellow/green depending of the status of the minimserver) appears in the upper left corner of the desktop. See attachment if I'm not clear.

Any idea how to solve this? Huh

This can happen with GNOME Shell. The workaround is to install TopIconsFix (or one of the other similar TopIcons shell extensions) as described in step 2 of this section. Also, you need to be on Java 9 or higher.

Thanks for your reply, but how can I install a Gnome extension on Cinnamon?

From a quick web search, Cinnamon is derived from GNOME 3. It sounds like Cinnamon has similar issues to GNOME 3 with tray icons. I had hoped it would be possible to install GNOME shell extensions on Cinnamon but from your reply it sounds like this is not possible. Your Java version is fine.

Java does use XEMBED for tray icons and there is no realistic prospect that this could change. This works on most Linux desktops and was apparently broken on recent versions of GNOME Shell by a deliberate choice of the GNOME developers. As it says in the bugzilla thread linked by mtwebster, the only solution is to use the TopIconsPlus (or similar) extension.

I did a quick web search and there is a suggestion in this blog post for converting GNOME Shell extensions for installation on Cinnamon. I don't have Linux Mint or Cinnamon so I haven't tried this.

I have made a change in MinimWatch that works around the Cinnamon issue that causes the incorrect icon placement. With this change, the icon is placed in the correct position when using Linux Cinnamon. This change is available in MinimWatch update 97.

At present, update 97 can be installed manually from the About (watch) dialog (click Show updates) or from the Packages tab of the Properties (watch) dialog.
