Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
Hi

For quite a number of weeks using a Naim NDs XS and Melco hard disc drive the Naim app is no longer picking up the Minim Server. I think this mal function may have occurred after I carried out a software update for the Naim. Minim Server is definitely selected on the Melco.

I've been away for several weeks and so haven't been able to report this previously. But at the moment the only way I have been able to get the Minim Server to operate is by undertaking a rescan of the songs and playlists. Then the next time I turn the boxes on again it has stopped working again. In fact having just tried that again, even that hasn't worked this time. Please help.

Jeremy

As a start, try powering off all your audio equipment and all your network equipment, including your router and any switches, then power everything on again in the order described in this section. This might fix the problem.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
Hi
Thanks for your reply but, no, that hasn't fixed the problem and I've read the notes in the link you have supplied and none of that applies. I can access the Minim server on my phone every time if I rescan songs and play lists on the Melco. This gets it to work temporarily and then it disappears again. Getting incredibly frustrated with this as essentially non-functional - has always worked in the past and nothing else changed at my end. Jeremy.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
Please try some other control point app such as mconnect or BubbleUPnP to see whether MinimServer also disappears from this when it disappears from the Naim app. This will help with diagnosing what is causing the problem.

Was the Naim software update for the NDs XS or was it an update for the Naim app? If you think this has caused the problem, have you reported it to Naim?

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
Thanks for getting back to me. I downloaded the BubbleUPnP. It did not pick up Minim Server but when I switched to Twonky Server it picked this up. I deleted the Naim app on my phone and reinstalled. As with doing a Rescan tracks and Playlist on the Melco, the new downloaded app then picked up Minim, but as soon as first track played it disappeared again. I haven't reported this to Naim as I figured that you must have quite a number of other users who have the Naim equipment and have updated the software (the update was for the naim box, not the App) and so I had originally expected in posting on this forum that I would quickly get a fix. It seems to me this a problem only I have.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
This kind of instability suggests a problem with your network that is affecting UPnP multicast discovery. These problems can be very difficult to diagnose and they usually don't affect normal network use such as web browsing, downloading, etc.

If you can describe your network setup in detail (all devices and how they are connected to each other via your router, switches, etc.), this might provide some clues as to what might be causing the problem and ideas for what to try next.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
Thanks for your reply. I have a BT Smart Hub 2 router. This is connected into the electricity ring main with a Devolo dLan 200 plug. The same plug picks up the internet into the Naim. (Worth mentioning that the Naim continues to recognise and play internet radio without a problem). I access the Naim app via wifi with an apple smart phone. Not sure what other info. you need so please let me know. I am pretty certain there have been no changes in the above set up just prior to the Minim server no longer being recognised. Jeremy

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
This may not be relevant, but....
I have found Devolo extension plugs to be quite moody. I do not use them on my hifi network, but elsewhere. They seem rather sensitive to where they are plugged in, e.g. not in an extension block. Incidentally if you can download a Devolo app, for a Mac, that will actually pick up anything on your network, you are better than I.

Try getting a long ethernet cable and avoiding the Devolo by way of experiment.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
I agree with Donuk that you should try this without the Devolo to see if this improves the stability of discovery. For this test, both the Melco and the Naim should be plugged directly into the router using Ethernet cables.

Also, how is the Melco connected to the network? Is it close to the Naim? If the Melco and Naim are close together, you could connect the Naim to the Player port of the Melco using an Ethernet cable and connect the LAN port of the Melco to the router.

RE: Naim App no longer picking up Minim server
I hate to disagree with Simon, but if the Melco is conventionally used, as per instruction manual, in default mode,, I think the Naim should be plugged into to Melco, into the PLAYER socket, and the Melco LAN socket should be connected to the router. (Unless the Melco is connected in Direct mode, discussed elsewhere on this forum).

Apologies if I am wrong.

Donuk
