RE: [DON'T SHOUT IN HEADINGS, PLEASE] Advanced UPnP search (instead of retagging)
The search functionality of the lumin app may work well. However, this will always work just with the lumin app, but not with any other of the available control points. UPnP search is the more generic and more powerful concept.

I think that a search functionality is essential especially for large libraries in the case when one already exactly knows the track he wants to listen to. On the other hand, an intelligent browsing tree (like MinimServer provides) is essential for comfortably exploring the library. Both these features would perfectly complement each other in the most generic way.

A search functionality is what one intuitively expects when managing big data sets/libraries and it is what most users are used to from regular software media players (WMP, winamp, itunes, ...). I'm convinced that there would be more requests for UPnP search if more users would even realize that there is the possibiliy of searching in the context of UPnP and how well it could work (for example with the combination of twonky and BubbleUPnP/BubbleDS).

The suggestion that anything will work in the context of mentioning "Twonky" makes me truly curious Big Grin just kiddin'....

My point is that searching works well with the combination of twonky and BubbleUPnP. And yes, twonky has great support for UPnP search. I consider this the only feature where I prefer twonky to MinimServer.
But who knows, Simon repeatedly mentioned that there may be support for UPnP search in a future MinimServer release. When/if this day comes, I will finally get rid of twonky.

Okay, I apologize for "shouting" in the subject header. I'm happy to see that more people are interested in better search possibilities. Thanks for your thoughts and support. And by the way, Simon did state again that he would like to add UPnP search. I really hope he finds the time to do so.
Using trees AND advanced UPnP search, Minimserver would leave the competition behind.

Simon,

this is great news. A search function would be outstanding. I have not yet installed 0.7x, but if that does not have some kind of automatic library update on filesystem changes, that is my other wish for MinimServer. However, I do realize that may be impractical to implement in a program that runs on such a variety of operating systems.

Thanks for all you do!

Mike

I'm also hoping to add automatic rescanning for library changes in a future release.

There are some tricky technical/design issues with implementing both these new features. This is why I can't yet make a firm commitment that they will be supported.
