App to play music NAS > Minimserver > iPhone via headphone socket
Hi there,
I have a QNAP NAS running minimserver, which I use to great effect with a Linn streamer. However, sometimes I want to listen to music via headphones elsewhere in the house. Is there an app that will work with minimserver to allow me to stream and play music direct from the NAS on my iPhone (rather than playing music stored on the iPhone itself). I tried MyAudioStream, but to my ears the sound quality is bad - are there any others? Many thanks, James |

I use foobar on my iPhone 7 and it works.

I use foobar on iphoneX, works great, for both NAS playing and internally stored music, and by using the FTP method to upload Flac files to the device I've said goodbye to iTunes

Gapless playback is vital for some music (mainly, but not exclusively classical music). Unfortunately, this feature is missing from many players. I don't know about 8player lite, Mconnect lite or Glider, but I can confirm that Foobar2000 offers gapless playback on an iPad.

RE: App to play music NAS > Minimserver > iPhone via headphone socket
I'm always interested in checking other music players to see if I like their interface better for local playback than Foobar2000 on an iPad or BubbleUPnP on Android, so I have just checked out 8player lite, Mconnect lite and Glider.
Both 8player lite and Mconnect lite fail to offer gapless playback, which rules them out for my needs. The delays between tracks are quite short but still irritating when there should be no gap at all. Glider also failed my test, as it doesn't actually use the browsing tree provided by MinimServer! Glider went through a long 'syncing' process with MinimServer and then presented the music on my NAS in a much less coordinated fashion than normal. It was too much work to find my usual test piece for gapless playback, so I don't know if that feature is supported by Glider. |

Glider can sync music tracks from multiple music servers at the same time. These servers could present metadata differently, which is why Glider provides its own unified interface. Naturally, you do lose each servers tailoring options.
However, it’s a fairly new app and is still being developed. FWIW it does gapless playback. |

I'm glad to hear there was some rationale behind Glider's rejection of the MinimServer interface. Is the multiple music server capability designed for combining online sources such as Spotify and Tidal? I don't use such services and MinimServer is my only local source for computer-based music, so I can't check this out for myself. Rather oddly, the description for Glider states that "Local library support is limited to files either purchased or synced using iTunes, or copied to your device using iTunes File Sharing". This is incorrect. All the music files on my NAS came from ripping my CDs and SACDs and Glider had no problem accessing these files. iTunes played no part in the process. |

I think "local library" means files on your iPhone/iPad. A NAS would be a remote library.
It would be worth asking the author of Glider to add support for the MinimServer browse tree. I have done so and additional requests from other users might improve the chances. |
