DSD on OPPO 105D
Hi, I've read through the forums but no luck with my issue.
I'm dipping my toe into DSD downloads. I am comparing SACD's I own with identical DSD downloads (e.g. Analogue Productions, so, to be clear, the masterings and data match). Bottom line - I think there's a problem the way I'm getting the DSD to play on the OPPO. When I play the files direct on a USB thumb drive, it sounds good. But not in my normal config, which is: Synology ds214Play-->MinimServer-->BubbleUpnP-->ethernet-->OPPO all controlled with the LUMIN iPad app I do have the OPPO config'd to force DSD playback. I also have HDMI audio turned off. The files play, but sound noticeably inferior to SACD and USB Thumb drive. Any help greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Michael |

RE: DSD on OPPO 105D
Hi Michael,
I use an Oppo 105 but don't own DSD downloads matching any of my SACDs, so I am unable to try the sort of comparisons you have made. However, this is a MinimServer forum and thus not really the place to ask questions about the Oppo 105D. The following forum is probably the best source for such guidance: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/149-blu-ra...hread.html David |

RE: DSD on OPPO 105D
Having just re-read your post, I am a little puzzled by what you describe as your normal config, which implies that BubbleUPnP and Lumin are used simultaneously. Why do you need two DLNA control points?
In my own case, I have two separate scenarios for media streaming from my Synology NAS. For music, I use BubbleUPnP on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to handle files served by MinimServer on the NAS. For video, I simply use Oppo's MediaControl HD app on my iPad. Oppo's app is rather kludgy in many ways but it does the job for the relatively limited number of MKV rips I have made of my DVD/BD collection. David |

Why do you need two DLNA control points? Hi David, I'm not using the android Bubble UPnP app, rather the BubbleUPNPserver. I do this because it allow the OPPO to emulate an OpenHome media device. I was otherwise unable to get the Lumin app to recognize the Oppo under 'choose a Lumin'. Once the OPPO is chosen I can choose either the Synology or Minimserver. If there i a better way, please let me know! |

Yes, BubbleUPnP Server (only to force the Lumin app to recognize the OPPO), Minimserver handles the rest. Let me take it out of the chain and see what happens.
[/quote] OK - BubbleUpnP Server was set to transcode hi res down, I have removed that restriction. Apologies that this was not a minim servers issue, but, Simon, a Minimserver query for you: 1) is it necessary or desirable to transcode DSD (dff, sf) files to dopwav? Right now, as it happens, I am unable to do so. When dsf:dopwav is set, low-level static emerges. Leaving no DSD transcoding settings plays music (but is it DSD?). 2) Can you (would you want to?) transcode AIFF-->WAV24? My whole collection is AIFF 3) Any reason to choose avconv over ffmpeg or vice-versa? Kind regards, Michael |

Apologies that this was not a minim servers issue, but, Simon, a Minimserver query for you: This depends on your renderer. It sounds like your renderer supports streaming native DSD but doesn't support DoP/WAV (which it is playing as low-level static). You will need to check with the renderer manufacturer whether the renderer is playing a native DSD stream as DSD music. Quote:2) Can you (would you want to?) transcode AIFF-->WAV24? My whole collection is AIFF The supported transcoding combinations are listed in this section. AIFF is not currently supported as a transcoding input type. Quote:3) Any reason to choose avconv over ffmpeg or vice-versa? For Debian Linux, avconv is recommended because ffmpeg on Debian is a deprecated wrapper over avconv. For other platforms, you can choose whichever is most easily available. |

In theory, FLAC, AIFF, WAV and WAV24 with zero padding are all the same because they all contain the same lossless audio data. On some renderers, some people have noticed a difference in sound between these different formats. |
