Synology DSM 6.0 beta 2

Synology DSM 6.0 beta 2 has been released. There are some changes to how Java is packaged and installed and I have updated the MinimServer Synology downloads and installation instructions. Please let me know if you are running this beta and have any problems with MinimServer.

Simon, All I want to do is get from Java 7 to Java 8 using the installation manager...!

The good news is that it is now possible to install Java 8 on Intel and ARMv7 platforms. This is a one-step process rather than the current somewhat confusing two-step procedure of installing Java Manager and then downloading and installing Java.

The bad news is that Synology has decided to use OpenJDK instead of Oracle Java. For Intel platforms, this is fine. For ARMv7 platforms, this is not fine because OpenJDK for ARMv7 doesn't have a JIT (just-in-time compiler) and this means performance is 5x slower than Oracle Java. Yo get acceptable performance, the user needs to download the Oracle JDK for ARMv7 and replace the installed Synology OpenJDK with the Oracle JDK they have downloaded.

I at least have an Intel platform, so that is good. Will you post step by step instructions at some point, or all they already there?

I never could have arrived at the point I am without your clear and concise instructions for installing Minimserver from the beginning. Including where to go and what to look for installing Java 7 first.

I have a DS214 (ARMv7), on DSM 5.2. I am contemplating installing DSM 6, but the instructions regarding getting the latest Oracle version of Java aren't so specific - any chance of some more detail? I don't have an immediate need to upgrade but I guess at some point I will have to.

I would recommend that you hold off for the time being. I will add more detailed instructions for installing Oracle Java on DSM 6.0 soon.

Thanks, I tend to be wary of being an early adopter for major OS version changes, appreciate your intent to put together detailed instructions in due course.

All went very smoothly thanks. Have to say, quality of support for Minimserver is in a class of its own.
