Understood. Would it be somehow possible to change the sort order before the groups are built? So that I could sort the tracks by Group, TrackNumber, DiscNumber first?

Groups are built (based on track number) before any sorting happens. The only way to change the sort order used for grouping is to change the TrackNumber tags.

An alternative approach is to create tag filters to show different lists of non-consecutive tracks. In your example, you could create a tag named Version with values Film Score and Alternates. When you browse by Version > Film Score, you will see only the Film Score tracks (sorted by track number). When you browse by Version > Alternates, you will see only the Alternates tracks (sorted by track number).
