Foreign character support in playlist filenames

I recently started using the Synology Audio Station app as a control point on my iPad when I'm in the mood to build/amend permanent playlists. It has the nice feature that I get stored .m3u playlist files available to all devices, with entries based on relative path names, and I can create new playlists on the fly.

I notice that when Minimserver scans playlists with file-entries containing foreign characters it is unable to find the file. Foobar also complains. Is the Audio Station app not using the character set properly, e.g. do I need .m3u8 playlist files? Wondered if there was a simple fix for this, rather than amending filenames each time this issue pops up.

If the foreign character uses UTF-8 encoding, the playlist file needs to be a .m3u8 file instead of a .m3u file. This is required by the M3U specification. The simplest solution is to rename all .m3u files generated by Audio Station to .m3u8 files.

Thanks, re-naming works for Minimserver, but Audio Station doesn't like the playlist now (why am I not surprised). Based on a search I think Synology might be using UTF-8 encoding without using m3u8 filenames. My search for an optimal solution to the problem of managing permanent playlists from my control point continues (Squeezebox variants are still about as good as I've found).
