SONOS and MinimServer - pierrejean75 - 30-10-2013 07:31

[attachment=302]I have install MinimServer on my SYNOLOGY DS411j, fine

But I do not see it on my SONOS audio device

SONOS is UPnP (not DNLA) compatible, for example I see perfectly (running on my PC) : Foobar2000+Pluging UPnP, Assset UPnP, Windows Media, Rhapsody and XBMC

But I do not see MinimServer

Could you help me ?

Thank's

Pierre

Sonos has its own proprietary music server which is built directly from your music files and not from a UPnP music server.

You tell Sonos where your files are during setup using Manage Music Library / Music Library Setup. It then builds its own library (music server). As it builds this directly from the music files, its why you must Update Music Index Now when you rip or download new music.

There has been some previous discussion of this topic. For example, see this thread.

It is my understanding that Sonos does not support standard UPnP/DLNA servers, but requires the server to implement nonstandard protocols for it to be seen by Sonos.

Thank's for your both replies

Yes SONOS has a home server but SONOS is now compatible with UPnP, Rhapsody and Windows Media server

See on the hardscreen copy I have made that for example Foobar2000 + plugging UPnP server work fine : I can access on my SONOS to all my music files trough Foobar2000, the only bad point is that Foobar2000 need that I have a PC computer running

I have also tested with XBMC and Asset Upnp, both work fine for SONOS but work only on Windows computers

It is my understanding that these other UPnP servers are using nonstandard Microsoft conventions for how they implement UPnP. This allows them to support the nonstandard assumptions imposed by Sonos. MinimServer is compliant with UPnP standards, and should work with any standard UPnP control point or renderer.

If I find how to contact the author of the Foobar 2000 pluggin would you be abble to to see if it could be possible to add some lines in the MimServer code to make it SONOS compatible ? This will help many nay SONOS consummers in the world and so will make you many mores clients Smile

I think a better approach is for Sonos to support standard UPnP and DLNA servers without imposing any special compatibility requirements. This will help existing Sonos customers and will help Sonos to get more customers.

I hadn't realized that. I don't run any windows or rhapsody servers so don't see anything show up on ios, android or windows Sonos controller. I have twonky running on a WD MyBookWorld server and on QNAP and MinimServer on QNAP.
So it looks like Sonos isn't working with twonky well either. Although with twonky I can use Kinsky to send twonky based music to a sonos unit and have it play but MinimServer music sent in this way does not play.
