I'm installing MinimServer on a linux server and I want to use a Synology NAS for my music files. Do I need to mount the NAS share on the linux server and point the content dir to the mount or is there a more direct way?

Yes, you need to use a network mount on the Linux server. Alternatively, you could run MinimServer on the NAS.
