FFmpeg 5 or 6 for melco - Flyersteve67 - 02-07-2025 18:39

After achieving working BBC radio streaming my NAS I know I need FFmpeg 5 or 6 (I use 6 on the NAS). 4 will not decode the BBC Radio feed.

The MinimStreamer instructions for FFmpeg installation on the melco via packages only refer to version 4. Can FFmpeg versions 5 or 6 be installed on the melco for use by minimstreamer?

The issue with the Synology DSM version of FFmpeg not being able to transcode BBC radio streams is not caused by any differences between FFmpeg 4, 5 and 6. It is caused by Synology installing a deliberately crippled version of FFmpeg 4 as part of Synology DSM.

The FFmpeg 4 executable that MinimServer uses on Melco is not crippled in this way. It fully supports all features of MinimServer including all transcoding combinations. There are no changes in FFmpeg 5 or 6 that affect or improve the functionality or performance of MinimServer on Melco (or any other platform). Because of this, there is no option to install FFmpeg 5 or 6 on Melco.

ah, so FFmpeg 4 can transcode AAC directly?

Yes, except for the crippled versions included in Synology DSM and some releases of QNAP QTS.

Simon,

I am using the ffmpeg version from synocommunity

https://synocommunity.com/package/ffmpeg5 (they have also 4 and 7)

Is this the "crippled" one ?

All the SynoCommunity versions of FFmpeg are fine. The only crippled version is the version that Synology includes as part of DSM.
