MinimServer is preventing my Synology NAS from hibernating - haggis999 - 03-03-2025 23:55

A recent, and long overdue, tidy up of my study made the disk LEDs on my primary Synology NAS DS412+ visible for the first time in several years. It then became obvious that it was failing to go into hibernation when I was not using the NAS, which was set to hibernate after 15 minutes of inactivity.

I reduced the hibernation timeout to the minimum of 10 minutes and then spent some time today working through a lengthy Synology checklist for hibernation failures. The final action I took was to disable MinimServer. About 10 minutes later the NAS went into hibernation mode.

I reactivated MinimServer, which obviously cancelled hibernation, but played no music and made no other use of the NAS for over an hour. All the disk LEDs on my NAS remained solidly lit up and hibernation was not reactivated. I repeated this procedure two more times. Hibernation worked every time MinimServer was stopped and failed when MinimServer was turned on (but unused).

How do I fix this?

This morning, I realised that I was unfairly blaming MinimServer for my NAS hibernation problem.

I use JRiver Media Center for entering metadata for audio and video files. I also use JRMC to play videos and to review my audio collection, though I don't normally use it for playing audio. I wasn't using JRMC during my hibernation tests yesterday afternoon, but I had been using it in the morning. However, even if you stop using JRMC its Media Server stays running as a service. I have now used Task Manager to turn off that service and my NAS went into hibernation 10 minutes later Smile

Thanks for this update. MinimServer shouldn't interfere with NAS hibernation if the MinimServer logging level is set to Info or Verbose.

That seems a little unintuitive. Did you really mean to say "MinimServer shouldn't interfere with NAS hibernation UNLESS the MinimServer logging level is set to Info or Verbose"?

No, I meant what I wrote.

If the logging level is set to Info or Verbose, NAS hibernation should work.

If the logging level is set to Debug or Trace, NAS hibernation will not work.

Thanks for that clarification.

I haven't looked at my MinimServer configuration for over 6 years, but my notes confirm that I am using the Info setting.

Hello @all!
I'm a new user of MinimServer and I have been testing this software for the past 2 month. It's everything that I have ever wanted, it fits all my needs but I have a problem with hibernation.
I run MinimServer from a dedicated Lenovo ThinkStation P330 Tiny (i7 8700, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD, Windows 10 Pro). When running MinimServer my PC won't hibernate. It runs ONLY MinimServer, no other server or software. If I close MinimServer the PC hibernates. I've checked the log level as sugested and I'm on default configuration so loglevel is set to "info". Also I've checked when running MinimServer in comand prompt with "powercfg /requests" command and I can't see any process that is preventing my PC from going to sleep Sad.
Any help would be much appreciated. Beside this issue all is excellent related to this software. This is the only problem I'm faceing.

Kind regards,

Are you doing Hibernate manually from the Start button or do you have a timeout set for putting the machine to sleep?

I have tried this on a Windows 10 PC. A manual hibernate works either with or without MinimServer running. Settting a timeout for sleep doesn't work (either with or without MinimServer running). The screen goes black but the machine is still running.

Update: I found another process that was preventing the sleep timeout from working. After stopping this process, sleep timeout is now working with or without MinimServer running.

Many many thanks for Your reply!
Exactly my problem. I have setup in my settings if no activity the PC to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. Without MinimServer running PC goes to sleep. With MinimServer running the PC doesn't go to sleep. As I'm using this PC only to stream music via MinimServer I need that it sleeps when MinimServer is not used. I use a different PC to stream via NFS Server my video library. That PC sleeps each time when no request are made to NFS Server.
I hope You can help me with this issue.

Again,
Many Thanks,
Vlad

Please see the update to my previous post. Sleep is working for me either with MinimServer running and idle or with MinimServer not running.

Is there perhaps some other device on your network that is communicating with MinimServer periodically and this network communication is preventing sleep?
