Does Apple Lossless work on Minim? - Robert - 04-04-2016 22:51

I have a big iTunes library of classical music ripped mostly into Apple Lossless (ALAC) format. I want to use a Zen server to connect to my new Naim Unitilite player. Minim was recommended by Zen as the best server software for classical music, but I'm not sure whether it will work with my ALAC files. ALAC isn't listed as a format in the Minim user guide, but there is the following comment later, which I don't understand--I thought MPEG-4 was a video format:

MPEG-4 Audio files containing either Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio data, with MPEG-4/iTunes tags

Yes, Minimserver plays alac files. MPEG-4 is th file container for files encoded with both AAC and alac codecs. The files have an extension of .m4a. Minimserver handles them without issue just like flac files.

The MPEG-4 container can be used for video only, audio only or video+audio. The file extension can be .m4a or .mp4. By convention, Apple has chosen to use .m4a for MPEG-4 files that contain audio only. MinimServer can handle MPEG-4 audio files with either a .m4a or .mp4 extension.
