Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 16:22 I run Minimserver on my Synology NAS (DS1513+ DX513) and up until late November everything ran fine. Then, all of a sudden I couldn;'t play anything higher bitrate than redbook without significant buffering. This is into any renderer (Aries, Rendu, Playpoint, etc) I chose. Prior to this I could do multichannel DSD256 for gosh sakes. So I tried non-Minimserver players (JRiver, HQplayer, both simply pointing to Nas as file server) and sure enough the same buffering was occurring! If I added a local USB drive as the temporary library of choice then all was well. I continue to try and find out what the hell is going on; everything is either gigabit or fiber (with FMCs) and nothing I can remember has changed. I am even getting an occasional IP conflict message from my router (ATT UVerse gateway) so I suspect that. Hmmm Question: as I continue to troubleshoot I have filled up this temporary USB drive and liked being able to use it. But it does me no good when wanting to listen via DLNA/Open Home (i.e renderer). So...my question is: can I install Minimserver on my Windows Server 2012 R1 music server pc, point it to the local USB drive attached, and then find it on the home LAN for my renderers? I want to see if the NAS is any part of my problem (Minimserver or not), or whether the buffering will continue even with the local USB'd Minimserver instance, thereby removing the NAS as a suspect. Thx Ted RE: Troubleshooting question - simoncn - 21-12-2015 18:04 (21-12-2015 16:22)ted_b Wrote: I run Minimserver on my Synology NAS (DS1513+ DX513) and up until late November everything ran fine. The buffering could be caused by the CPU on your NAS being overloaded (this should be easy to check) or by an issue with one of your network components. One way to troubleshoot the cause is to strip down your network to an absolute bare minimum. If this eliminates the problem, you can add back your normal network components one by one until the problem occurs. Yes, you can do this. RE: Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 20:07 Simon, thanks. Yes, I have tried the "eliminate one thing at a time" and until now have not found a candidate. I may have found one. I successfully installed Minimserver (and Java; realized I had no Java on my WS2012 AO pc) on my CAPS server. And now, via my Signature Rendu, which thankfully continues to be seen on Kazoo as OpenHome via either Minimserver library instance (Caps or NAS) even though BubbleServer is installed on NAS...guess it works for whole LAN.....I can now pick either library, my mini-library that sits on the CAPS local USB, or my large NAS library. I choose, first, to listen to some 24/192 and DSD64 stuff via CAPs and there was no buffering at all, quite glitch-free. Nice! The same tracks, played back from the NAS library, buffered every 20 seconds, sometimes for a few seconds at a time. Both libraries are accessed via the same router, same gigabit switch (fiber in fact), etc. My small brain tells me I have a NAS issue. I will again contact Synology and try to troubleshoot. Any ideas? I don't think I did anything different with the Synology from earlier this year to November, but maybe a DSM firmware update did something, but both I and they doubt it. Their customer support confirmed, this past Friday, that my network setup was correct (IPv6 turned off, etc etc). There is clearly a kink in this large hose somewhere. RE: Troubleshooting question - simoncn - 21-12-2015 20:26 Have you checked the CPU resource consumption on the Synology? RE: Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 21:22 Yes, here it is playing DSD64

If you do a file copy, does the network connection run at constant speed or do you see dips like the above picture? RE: Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 21:53 Great point! I found one large 21 GB audio file and did a copy to my local hdd on my desktop pc. Here is the result
RE: Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 22:02 So the NAS is connected to a fiber (same thing happened when all copper switch/cables too) Diablo switch in the music room. This switch runs from my ATT Uverse router. Off this switch are my music room sources (Caps music server with other Minimserver on it), Rendu renderer, Playpoint renderer, another music server. My desktop (the one involved in the result above and the one that also shows buffering when simply using JRiver pointed to the NAS), is directly connected to the router. The router also has another switch off it for other parts of the house (currently irrelevant). I suggest you try both of the following to see whether the problem with file copying still occurs: NAS -> Diablo switch -> PC NAS -> router -> PC RE: Troubleshooting question - ted_b - 21-12-2015 22:57 I will try those configs, but keep in mind that those music players/servers also hanging off the Diablo switch also buffer like crazy anything of size from the NAS (redbook is about all they digest without buffering). Yet when the NAS is not involved (CAPS->Diablo switch -> Rendu) my music is fine. I'll report back tonight. Thx again Ted |
