New here & some Properties questions - RexManning - 15-07-2015 16:18 Hi there, Being new here; first of all thanks a lot Simon for your great product. I have been using it for a couple of years now, without bothering about tagging and settings at all. Now I finally have some time to focus on cleaning up my 23000+ songs library... So my new best 3 friends have become Minimserver, Mp3Tag and the Internet. I am finally really seeing the great power you put in this product and have donated today to show this appreciation. For my questions: I set up most of my properties to my liking, with All Artists being the option I enjoy most. The software and the manual are very "binary" and not so visual, so a lot of reading and re-reading is required. The things I currently can't figure out (I'll explain as if I'm browsing): 1. All Artists - (pick an artist) - # items - sorts on Title now. Could I sort this song list on Year, Album, Tracknr? 2. All Artists - (pick an artist) - # albums - shows Album Title - Year and below the Artist (or Albumartist). Can that show Album Title - All Artists (just like I have currently showing in my streamer artist / artist / artist / etc)? Again; thanks a lot for your effort, I am already really enjoying my music database a lot more by rediscovering so many great featuring artists. If the album doesn't have an AlbumArtist tag and it contains multiple artists, you should get a list of all the artists for the album tracks that you have selected (not all the artists for the complete album). Is this what you are seeing? Which control point are you using? I thought I didn't read up well enough. Quote:2. All Artists - (pick an artist) - # albums - shows Album Title - Year and below the Artist (or Albumartist). Can that show Album Title - All Artists (just like I have currently showing in my streamer artist / artist / artist / etc)? I use AlbumArtist tags for all files (mostly Jazz). A lot of my albums involve various cooperating artists, for instance half of the album could be this drummer, the other half another drummer. Any album solely on the name of the lead Artist, even though there are other Artists involved, will have the lead's name as the AlbumArtist. If the album is clearly a group effort where no one is in the lead (2+ people), I tag AlbumArtist as Various Artists. So do I understand correctly now that it will always show AlbumArtist if present, and will use All Artists if AlbumArtist is empty? Can I manipulate that behaviour in the settings, or would I have to clear all AlbumArtist fields in my database (rather not)? At home in Europe I use a Naim streamer. Here in South America I can only use my laptop unfortunately. Where Foobar is not very easy to use as a control point to check these sort of things. So I am using my iPad with either VLC or Arcam MusicLife at the moment for this Tagging/Minimserver purpose only. Love to hear for a better alternative than foobar on my laptop though. Example (don't mind what's not red, I'm still cleaning): ![]() ![]() Thanks for the very quick response too by the way

MinimServer is consistent because it is showing the 1+1 album with Various Artists in the # albums list in the first screenshot and also as the album at the top of the second screenshot. The left-hand pane in the second screenshot is showing individual tracks with track artists Herbie Hancock / Wayne Shorter. To see this track information in the items/albums lists, you can select # items instead of # albums or you can open the album's contents from the # albums list. You could try Linn Kinsky 4.3.2 as a UPnP control point for Windows. Later versions dosn't work properly with non-Linn streamers. Ok, so "Minimserver is consistent" means it works as designed and we don't have the option to show All Artists for an album in the All Artist - Album view? Any hope of that changing in the future?? In the meantime I will delete my AlbumArtist data from these albums again, that should do the trick. I can't remember why I opted for the AlbumArtist Various, but there must have been a good reason...which I most likely will find out again after ![]() - The option to select #items: as mentioned gives me all songs for that artist (258 in Herbie's case) for all it's albums in chronological order, not so handy and even so, I can't see the album and all containing artists. - The option to use the # albums, I get a list of all my 2137 albums in year order (as I like them to be when I browse to an artist, latest album on top. So also not so handy when I'm scrolling for 1997 album 1+1. But, I tried and located it and it didn't show all artists however, it showed the same Various Artists again the same as in the earlier screenshots. Quote:At home in Europe I use a Naim streamer. I'll give that a go, not the most urgent of questions though. ** Update I just checked with a difficult album (different songs, different artists) and removed the Album Artist (first being Lee Ritenour). It seems to be working like I would like it. Looks like it somehow throws all Artists from all songs on one pile and shows that under the Album. So I will start again from A..

Any hope of that changing in the future?? An album is shown the same way consistently in all views. It doesn't matter whether you navigate to it via All Artists or via Artist or via Composer or via Date, etc. I don't think it is likely that this will be changed in the future. I can't remember why I opted for the AlbumArtist Various, but there must have been a good reason...which I most likely will find out again after It can be useful to have an AlbumArtist tag if the contents of the album aren't all in a single folder. Without an AlbumArtist tag (or a single consistent Artist tag for all tracks), the album contents might not be merged correctly. You can handle this by setting AlbumArtist to the list of artists, if this is the artist information that you want to be displayed consistently whenever you view the album. RE: New here & some Properties questions - RexManning - 15-07-2015 22:20 Ok, consistency in all views would indeed be a showstopper for changing that. Thanks for the help and information. I will differentiate with these albums in three ways: some without AlbumArtist, some with AlbumArtist "Various Artists" and some with AlbumArtist the same as the Lead Artist. Only problematic for duets, but that's ok. This is how a "difficult album" now looks:
