Transcoding flac to aiff - krutsch - 21-01-2015 21:22

Hello,

I've looked at the documentation, and I think the answer is 'no', but in case I missed something... is it possible to configure MinimStreamer to transcode from FLAC/ALAC to AIFF?

I ask, because I think the decoding back to PCM is best done on the MinimServer host machine (sounds best on my streamer - really), but the missing meta data is a pain on the streamer side.

Seems like AIFF would be the best of both worlds and is supported via FFMpeg.

Thanks!

This isn't possible currently. What would be the advantage of this over transcoding to WAV? In both cases, the transcoded stream wouldn't contain any metadata.

I'm also not sure why it's a problem not to have metadata in the transcoded stream. It's up to the control point to send the renderer any metadata that it requires.

Of course, you are right; I wasn't thinking about this correctly

The issue might be with my renderer, which is not bothering to display anything, when the stream type is WAV. That is, no album art or Album/Genre/Artist - literally, just the filename.

I've seen this behavior with both Sony and Pioneer Blu-ray players, used as renderers. I'd hoped that AIFF would present differently.

Everything works, in that the tracks play and the control point (i.e. Bubble or Kazoo) displays the meta data just fine.

Did the WAV stream contain tags? If it was produced by MinimStreamer transcoding, it wouldn't contain any tags.

I've come across players (don't remember which) that ignore the UPnP metadata sent by MinimServer and insist on reading metadata (such as album art and artist info) from the audio stream. This is an extremely poor/lazy design.

The WAV stream is produced by MiniStreamer, so it doesn't appear to contain any tags.

Unfortunately, Sony and Pioneer don't appear to share your view on what is/isn't acceptable software design :-) I suppose odds are high that both are using a third-party software stack for DLNA/UPnP, so it's not surprising they have the same flaws.

I have to get a different streamer... thanks for responding.

I use iDealshare VideoGo to transcode from FLAC/ALAC to AIFF without missing meta data.

Here is the step by step guide at http://www.idealshare.net/audio-converter/flac-converter-for-mac-windows.html
