The landscape is changing thanks to Google and Samsung, and I believe Samsung do offer 5 years of security updates on their top tier hardware as can be seen from this post, but I would absolutely want that verified somewhere if I was going to buy one of the more expensive tablets. That being said, if you're looking at a cheaper option with the intention of using purely as a controller then security updates aren't as critical.
I stopped buying Samsung tablets, 5 years of security update is not very interesting with a lifespan of 3 years max.Angry

I think usually Samsung tablets are more durable than only 3 years. But I never had one yet.

5 years of support for a tablet that costs 600-1000 Euro IMHO is not enough. Ecologically this is a catastrophe.

Hmmm Angel from my point of view;
1.) If you only use Bubble with the tablet in your local WLAN
2.) Uninstall / disable all other apps ( I know not possible for all apps)
3.) All settings of the tablet to the most secure and privacy choice
It should not be a big risk without security updates and you can use an "older" and cheaper tablet (or an older phablet).

Just my point of view...

Apple has a similar policy (slightly more generous), with my iPad Air 2 blocked from installing the latest iPadOS version. It is 7 years old.

For my personal use, running the previous version of iPadOS would be fine. Despite this, I have to buy a new iPad so that I can support MinimServer users who are using the latest iPadOS version.

Yes, I didn't mean to imply that Apple was (much) better regarding updates. But sometimes they still offer security updates for old devices that do not get a new major release after many years. The problem is that there is no guarantee for this.

Do we need an app for that? Why do me not think about a website which runs 'inside' MinimServer? These would be (more or less) device independent and could by used on smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc.

I have both Android and IOS tablet; so I tested everything.

I personally dislike BubbleUPnP; too much of an engineering interface, not user friendly at all.

I have been working with programmers my whole life; there is a rule: never ask them to design an interface. That was always the strength of Apple: have true designers doing the job, not programmers. The superb Steve Job's keynote where he introduces the iPhone is a masterpiece (avail on youtube).

When you compare the Apple design with smartphones at the time, as shown on the keynote, you realize he invented many things no engineer thought of: making the keyboard a picture instead of a physical keyboard, pinching photos to zoom in or our, swiping to go to the next photo, swiping to delete an entry, etc.... All this is familiar now, but he is the one who invented this in 2007 - with credit to Jony Ive, Apple's designer who did the job (a top British Industrial designer by training, not a programmer ;-).

I have tested many apps. No one surpasses Lumin. Lumin app is a typical designer's approach; as an example, zooms in or out the images when pinching and therefore changing the number of images per row - but not only: the switch between icon or list, the navigation is so easy, the different parts are so clean, etc.

And a last comment, Simon, hope you will take it positively: your tool is superb, and everywhere I go, I advocate for minimServer as being the best server you can imagine; much better than Roon Audirvana or any other servers (as an exemple, I had a thread recently about this on fb, with Alain Lompech who is a top French Music Journalist, and Yves Riesel who is the founder of Qobuz).

However, your admin interface is a typical programmer's interface... ;-) But I don't use it a lot, and as the backend part is really important, I still continue to advocate for minimServer.

Anyway, de gustibus et coloribus non es disputandem...

In fairness comparing Lumin to BubbleUPnP is like comparing a text editor to a word processor, the latter is necessarily more complicated. That being said there's only a few settings that you need to change to make it more simple than even Lumin.
  • More > Settings > Library: Enable 'Track number'
Whilst you're here you can also disable from the 'Virtual folders' section: 'Bookmarks','Saved playlists','Recently Played' and 'Random tracks/Random albums' if you're not going to use them.
  • More > Settings > Local and Cloud: Disable 'Enable Local and Cloud Library' (Functionality to allow you to access not only local files, but also Qobuz, TIDAL, SMB Shares, personal cloud storage e.t.c)
  • More > Settings > Look and feel: Enable 'Show Devices tab' & Change 'Side menu icon location' to 'Top bar'

I do like the larger index icons in Lumin that aren't available in BubbleUPnP until you get to the secondary level, and I like the track properties screen with the ability to perform a UPnP search, but then I would really miss the ability to present html and booklet links in Bubble from MinimServer.

It might be because I prefer a phone interface but I find Lumin cluttered, and then there's the indexing! Having said that it'd probably be my second option but only because Hi-Fi Cast isn't OpenHome.

The other thing to remember is that without BubbleUPnP they'd be no BubbleUPnP server, which would rule out Lumin for most people anyway!

The screenshots below represent from left to right: Device Selection, UPnP Browsing, Playlists, Now Playing and Metadata screens. Lumin is in stock settings with BubbleUPnP as detailed above.

Both solid options.

You confirm my statement: the idea to create a word processor to navigate in your music is a typical engineer idea. Why do we need this ?

What we need is simplicity of use and nice design. The greatest Apple innovation is the absence of a user manual; no one needs this. Your list of parameters is exactly the reverse of what should be done; we then need a user manual. Not good.

I don't get your point of BubbleUpnp server and Lumin ? I have been using both without any issue; at least until I switched to DSM 7; with BubbleUPnP being then incompatible (unless you use Docker, I know... Yet another engineering approach; honestly who can, apart the geeks, understand the concept of virtualization).

And about the interface, again de gustibus et coloribus non es disputandem

RE: Any Chance of a MinimServer Control Point App? - Peter StreamMagic - 19-03-2023 21:28

...... de gustibus et coloribus non es disputandum.......... So it is.

I started streaming in 2012 and had to buy a tablet to be able to use my new equipment ........?
I bought my first iPad and whatever I tried, nothing worked like I expected.
Nothing natural about swiping,pinching...... you simple have to learn how things work.
Nothing wrong with Apple products I am used to it now, and slightly prefer iOS above Android, but again............de gustibus et coloribus non es disputandum!
