This makes no sense. I see your point. I was actually suggesting only that you experiment. If the player can play gapless when directly connected to the source, that gives you a basis for arguing that it should be able to do the same when network connected. It is the kind of change that could, I believe, be implemented in a firmware upgrade. (21-11-2014 21:16)Leixuros Wrote: The best solution would be that Apple makes a better iTunes and especially a better remote app. But there is no hope, they just made it worse and will not change this direction. Actually, the best solution is to develop the relevant standards (see my previous post) so that they are both open and meet users' needs, and then for manufacturers to implement those standards. This is exactly what I would expect Apple not to do. But maybe I'm prejudiced ... (21-11-2014 21:16)Leixuros Wrote: Anyway: the gapless playback matters very much. There a lot of pieces which are in many tracks. Or parts of longer works which follow attacca and so on. It’s really impossible to accept those gaps. This is one of the many point where the alleged technical progress is really a huge step backwards. Of course it's your call as to how much the issue matters to you. But, to be fair, the technical step forward has, in fact, been made, fully. Unfortunately, it has not been fully implemented on your player. David RE: Gap between tracks - Leixuros - 22-11-2014 07:33 I found some forum posts saying that this feature can’t be added by a firmware upgrade. They had t change a chip in the device. It seems that some players can play gapless, but the price is from 1000.-€ up. That’s not what I’m looking for. ![]() Wel. It’s not a problem with Minim Server (which is and remains an amazing piece of software), so it makes no sense to discuss it here. But may be somebody can recommend a DLNA-device which is able to play gapless? May be something small and cheap, what I can just cinnect to my ONKYO device? Although it’s not really nessecary for me to keep it. The gaps it makes from time to time when it play Internet radio and in longer distances when it plays music from my server are annoying too... It was a mistake to buy this device, but now it’s too late. Some extension of the standard therefore has to be implemented to provide the gapless capability; this is certainly the case with the Linn players I use. This isn't correct. The UPnP AV specification includes the optional service action SetNextAVTransportURI which can be used by UPnP AV renderers and control points to support gapless play. Quote:I suspect (but, as DLNA is not an open standard, cannot know) that DLNA certification does not allow extensions to the protocols; if this is true, this would explain the advice given to Leixuros. Fortunately, this isn't true. If the extension is compatible with the DLNA protocols and the product passes the DLNA conformance tests, the product can be certified as DLNA.
RE: Gap between tracks - Leixuros - 22-11-2014 10:21 Just one more question. Let’s say, I buy a new player which promises galpess DLNA playback or FLAC and WAV. Can I expect that it plays my files gapless if I use minim streamer to convert ALAC to WAV? Can I expect that it plays my files gapless if I use minim streamer to convert ALAC to WAV? This should work. There have been problems with one or two players that require an immediate response from the server when they send a GET request for the stream. With transcoding, the server response can be delayed slightly and the player might not be able to handle this delay. To eliminate this small risk, you can do one of the following: 1) Post details of the player here to see whether other MinimServer users have been able to do gapless playback with transcoding. 2) Buy the player from a dealer who will give a refund if this functionality doesn't work. 3) Get a home trial before you buy the player. 4) Take a laptop running MinimServer to the dealer's shop to set up a trial demo there. RE: Gap between tracks - Leixuros - 22-11-2014 11:00 OK. Thanks. I buy it online, so I may give it back if it doesn’t work. But I’d prefer a solution which works ![]() The devices I’m thinking about are: DENON RCD-N8 or ONKYO CR-N755 (although my experience with ONKYO is not good, and I guess there is no gapless playback: they write only »DLNA 1.5« which says nothing about this point). Anyway I have no time to make this change this year. May be I try in january. RE: Gap between tracks - simoncn - 22-11-2014 11:18 (22-11-2014 11:00)Leixuros Wrote: OK. Thanks. It appears the Onkyo doesn't support gapless playback. RE: Gap between tracks - Leixuros - 22-11-2014 11:36 Hmm. So it’s not an ONKYO, no problem. But if understand well, I can’t use the gapless playback feature of the Denon device. Or may be I don’t understand this (a little bit strange) text: »Please also note that gapless is only possible if you use the media player function of the device, ie an album go directly to the device by remote control, RS-232C / IP control or via a Web interface. If you use the Windows "Play To" - or other media renderer features (Android music streaming, control by DMC, PlugPlayer, Media Connect, etc.) and use the Denon Remote App, gapless is not available.« This seems to mean, gapless playback is possible but there is no way to use this feature. (I don’t understand at alle what this means: »ie an album go directly to the device by remote control, RS-232C / IP control or via a Web interface«. May be here is a secret hidden?) Or may be I don’t understand this (a little bit strange) text: It means you need to use the player controls to play the album in gapless mode. You won't get gapless playback if you play the album using a separate UPnP control point such as PlugPlayer, etc. Edit: From subsequent discussion on this thread, it now appears the above statement is not correct. Although it doesn't work with PlugPlayer, it should work with BubbleUPnP. This is because BubbleUPnP implements the SetNetAVTransportURI service action and PlugPlayer doesn't implement this service action. RE: Gap between tracks - Leixuros - 22-11-2014 13:19 OK. This means, it is not possible to use this feature. OK. So there is no need to order the device. That’s very strange: The technical progress threw us in a situation like the gramophone time, when one had to change the disc every few minutes. That’s it. I have my old CD player and will put it back on my rack. This step back will be a huge step forward. (I like it to have the parts 4 and 5 of Beethoven’s fifth Symphony or the parts 3,4 and 5 of his sixth attacca. And so did Beethoven...) |
