"Rescan MinimServer" in JPLAY does not function...? - jcarlham - 21-05-2024 16:45

Greetings fellow travelings on the road to the "The Tower of Song" (i.e, one person's lifelong search for music that moves and inspires). I appreciate your reading and considering the following: I am having a problem activating digital music files on my Synology hard drive. I am starting this thread in hopes that someone with knowledge and experience can help me solve the problem. Here are the facts: I have a Synology DS124 on which I have a fairly large library of albums. (I also have a subscription to Qobuz, which I have enjoyed immensely!) This library was gifted to me not long ago by a very good friend. Just yesterday for the very first time I attempted to add two albums worth of digital files to my DS124. I successfully uploaded these dsf files to the proper folder in my Synology account, which is, as you know, online. Then, as I understand is the next step, I used the JPLAY application (loaded on my 9th gen iPad) to "Rescan MinimServer." I've tried this at least six times with the result being, "Error While Doing MinimServer Rescan." Okay...that's where I am stuck = clueless. (I am new to digital. Ask me anything about analog!) FWIW, and perhaps this is related, I am also unable to access the MinimServer "Configuration Page." What more can I say beyond, "HELP!?" with a huge THANK YOU in advance...jcarlham

This means JPLAY is not connected to a running instance of MinimServer.

If you open Package Center on your Synology NAS, is MinimServer running? You can check this by clicking Installed, then clicking the MinimServer icon and looking at the status shown there (Running or Manually Stopped).

Thank you so much for your reply and guidance! I did as you indicated and MinimServer is "running." So, I guess the problem must be something else?

I have just tried and rescan Minimserver from JPlay works as expected here, are the iPad and nas where Minimserver is running on the same network subnet? (this is mandatory) … for example: assuming that your network subnet is 192.168.1, ipad network ip address should be 192.168.1.x and your nas ip address should be 192.168.1.y where x and y are numbers from 2 to 254

Thank you, Stefano_mbp. I love the fact that you are designated as a "Senior Member." I'm a senior member, too--however, in age only! Otherwise, in terms of digital knowledge, I barely quality as a "Junior member." And therein may lie part of the problem. I'm an old guy trying to figure out the young guy stuff. I'm not complaining, mind you. I'm just asking for your patience (with me), as you help me figure out what leads to what here in the highly sensitive world of Digital. Okay...here's what I can say in response. As far as I know, my iPad, NAS, and MinimServer are running on the same network "subnet." (Curious: Would I be able to access my DS124 library and Qobuz if this wasn't so? Because, as it is, my iPad with JPLAY is able to access both.) That said, I didn't set up my system. A very bright and capable friend did. Sadly, he is out of the country and not reachable for an extended period. In response to your questions, here are the numbers I have discovered: My Optical Rendu media server: IP Port 192.168.0.4:49152. My MinimServer (DS124): IP Port 192.168.0.2:9791 (this is the number I see on the iPad / JPLAY / Settings / MinimServer). By contrast, the number I find through Synology is different, that being:
Control Panel / Connectivity / Network / Default gateway 192.168.0.1 (LAN). As far as iPad network ip address, I'm sorry, I don't know where to find that. Is any of this helpful in figuring out what's up? Too much? Too little? Thanks in advance...

The same subnet is mandatory for UPNP only.
To find the iPad ip address go to Settings, WiFi, and click on the circled i (i) that appears on the right at the and of the row that describe your Wi-Fi connection (see attached image) , then scroll the page and you’ll be able to find the ip address.
Regarding the Synology, the address is the one you reported for Minimserver therefore they are all on the same subnet.
Can you shut down JPlay on iPad (swipe off) and relaunch?

Greetings again Stefano_mbp--Thank you for guiding me to my iPad's IP address. Here it is: 192.168.0.6

Yes, I can shut down JPLAY (swipe off) and restart. (Now there's something I can do!). I have done that at least twice thus far after which I have restarted JPLAY and tried the 'rescan' function again--but no dice.

Based on the IP address of my iPad is 192.168.0.6 and based on what you have indicated, it would seem the iPad is on the same subnet at the Synology...(I sure do miss problems such as, there's a glob of dust on my stylus!)

Just tried shutting down JPLAY again, restarted and tried the rescan function...nope. So, I went a step further and completely shut down and restarted the iPad, reopened JPLAY, attempted to rescan and...nil. How you say, my oh my...

Can you play something with JPlay without issues?

Yes. With JPlay I can play anything stored on the DS124 and anything streamed from Qobuz.
