Minimserver, upmpdcli and MPD. Album booklet? - nbpf - 10-01-2016 17:57

I am completely new to Minimserver. My main motivation for using Minimserver is its ability to support browsing classical music collections. I have used MPD (mainly in conjunction with ncmpcpp and MPaD as clients) for about three years and I am very happy with its stability and sound quality.

But its hard-wired, non-customizable system of tags is almost unusable for classical music. With Minimserver, upmpdcli and MPD, I have now managed to set up an ideal music server. Thanks to all developers of these great products!

There is one open issue: when directly controlling MPD via MPaD (iOS), I can open the booklet of the currently playing album on an iPad (MPad relies on an HTTP server for displaying cover art and booklets, I have an HTTP server running on the same machine that runs Minimserver, MPD and upmpdcli). On a Debian laptop, I can run a simple script to fetch the booklet of the currently playing item.

Is there a control point for iOS compatible with Minimserver that supports opening the booklet of an album? I have checked Linn Kinsky and mconnect and both do not appear to support this functionality.

Thanks, nbpf

PS By the way, mconnect also does not apper to support gapless replay: it sends single files to the renderer instead of full playlists!

Welcome to the MinimServer forum!

I don't know of any UPnP control point for iOS that can display an album booklet. Perhaps other forum users might be able to suggest something.

I believe BubbleUPnP on Android supports this but I haven't tried it myself.

If you find a solution for this, please post it here.

I am also using MPaD w/ MPD ... how are you opening a PDF (i.e. booklet) for the currently playing album? Are you browsing by folder?

Not necessarily. if you have setup MPaD correctly (in "Connections" advanced menu, section "LOCAL COVER ART") you just need to keep yout finget on an album for about one second: a pop-up menu will appear with the items:

Play this album now
Play this album next
Play only this album
Add this album to playlist
Show liner notes

Tapping "Show liner notes" will open the .pdf reader with the booklet, if this is made avaialble by your HTTP server.

Thanks Simon, I'll certainly do.

I am using MPD on a Bryston BDP-1 and I am not seeing that last menu option on MPaD. Maybe there is a naming convention that must be followed for it to appear or maybe the embedded HTTP server on the Bryston isn't configured to operate as you describe.

What do you see under Connections > advanced menu > LOCAL COVER ART in MPaD?

Ah, I see. There is an entry for Liner Notes Filename. Very cool, I didn't notice that before.

The problem I have is this: each PDF booklet is located under the album folder, but named something difference (e.g. Digital Booklet - Artist - Album.pdf) to work with iTunes.

I could certainly rename them all... I think I will try this.

By the way, what do you name your booklets as? Something like LinerNotes.pdf?

Oh, one more thing: have you found a place to download liner notes for albums? I have a bunch from places I've downloaded purchased music, but for ripped CDs, what to do? I have also started collecting back cover images and storing them in the same folder as "back.jpg". A standard is needed...

No problem and no need to rename folder-specific .pdf files. Just create a symbolic link named booklet.pdf (or whatever name you like) in each folder from the command line:

ln -s whateverFolderSpecificNameYouMightHaveHere.pdf booklet.pdf

and fill the Liner Notes Filename field with "booklet.pdf".

I have symbolic links named booklet.pdf and folder.jpg to folder (album) specific .pdf and .jpg files in each folder.

I do not know of any site offering liner notes for albums. Hyperion allows free download of liner notes, but only for the products they sell. If you find a site offering liner notes, please let me know. I am in the same situation.

I can't really use symlinks on a FAT32 filesystem, which is what I am using on my Bryston for the external disks (I manage my library on a Mac). But, it's just as easy to make a copy named "booklet.pdf" - it's not like they ever change.

Thanks for the tip!
