Hi Simon - I installed Minim Server (and java) on my HP Microserver last night. It installed ok, scanned all my music then showed green.
Now, here's the thing - I can't see the server on the network. I have two other media servers running on the HP box, and I also have a windows script file that scans for media servers.
If I run the script on another PC on the network I only see Asset and the new Linn mediaserver.
If, however, I run the script locally on the server I see all three mediaservers.
Firewall problems, possibly? I'll have a play tonight but wondered if you could think of anything off the top of your head.

Thanks

Mick

That's a bit of a puzzle. All of your media servers should be using the same port for discovery (port 1900), so it's hard to see how a firewall issue could stop MinimServer being discovered but work for the other servers.

I suggest you install MinimWatch on one of your other PCs and see whether MinimWatch is able to discover MinimServer. If MinimWatch is able to discover MinimServer, you can use the Show log selection from the MinimWatch tray icon to look at the MinimServer log and see if there are any problems.
I've installed MinimWatch on both my PC and my server (which is where MinimServer is running) but it seems as if it's not running - this is what I see when I right-click it on either machine:-

This is a snapshot from my server, btw, so you can see MinimServer's icon is green.
Beyond 'About', 'refresh' and 'exit' there doesn't seem to be much I can do with it. I'll go back and read through your installation instructions in case I've done something daft - it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

There's no point in installing or running MinimWatch on the server.

If MinimWatch on another PC isn't picking up MinimServer, this means there's a problem in how MinimServer is talking to the network.

I suppose this might be a firewall problem (as you originally suggested). If you're using a firewall on the WHS machine that requires you to authorise specific applications to open network ports for listening, and if MinimServer isn't in this list of authorised applications, you'll get the kind of problems you're describing. Can you disable the firewall completely for a short test to confirm whether this might be the problem?

If this isn't the problem, there are a couple of other things you could try:

1) What happens if you click "Show log" from the green tray icon for MinimServer on the WHS machine? What do you see in the log?

2) Another useful thing to try would be to use the MinimServer tray icon to change the logging level to Trace and then restart MinimServer. If you do this and look in the log after the restart, what trace information do you see in the log?
Hi Simon - thanks for the suggestion - it's definitely the firewall as MinimServer appears on the network when I disable it and I can 'see' it from MinimWatch on my main PC.
So I now need to allow it past the firewall but I'm not sure what to 'allow' as Minim is java based and the selection appears to be looking for a .exe file to allow - I'm guessing I'll need to set up a new rule within the firewall to allow access...

Is this the Windows firewall? I checked my settings and there's a rule to allow connections for Java (TM) Platform SE binary. Have you got a rule for this program? Is the rule blocking connections?

Please let me know whether (and how) you've been able to fix this problem. This will help me improve the installation instructions by informing other users about this.

Yep, it's the Windows firewall. I noticed last night that Java (TM) Platform SE binary was listed in the incoming rules but disabled. I enabled it but no luck; I still can't see the server across the network.
The log doesn't mean that much to me but I could restart MinimServer with the log set to 'Trace' and email the log to you if you think that may help.

I've attached a screenshot of my Windows firewall incoming rules. Do you have the same entries?

It looks as if they're the same. I have a few more as I've been playing...
There's no entry for javaw.exe, only java.exe. That's likely to be the cause of the problem.

Can you try adding UDP and TCP entries for C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe and/or C:\Windows\System32\javaw.exe and see if that fixes it?
