I have begun the process of retagging my medium-sized music collection (c.1450 albums) to take advantage of the flexibility MinimServer offers. I should like to establish an Orchestra tag that would be editable in either mp3tag or Jaikoz (thereby leaving Artist free for soloists) but I can't see such a field in either program With my limited knowledge of tagging I don't know how to create one. Can anyone help?

In Mp3tag, you can select View -> Customize columns and press the New button to add a new tag such as Orchestra. I don't know if Jaikoz has a similar capability.

Thanks Simon. I'll check out Jaikoz but I think I might have to bite the bullet and install Windows on my Mac so that I can use mp3tag. There doesn't seem to be anything to match it.
yep, unfortunatley Jaikoz is a pretty useless monster. They prove it every day. And their argumentation in the quoted thread is just hilarious! If I'm an plain-vanilla iTunes user I would tag in there and dont need Jaikoz in the first place. So they should adhere to the standards and not follow Apple like stupid monkeys!
If it comes to tagging, nothing beats mp3tag. It runs very well on Mac OSX under VM / Wine in case you dont want / have a separate Windoof PC

I got a bit lost with the "artists" and "artist" fields and the vital importance of preserving "&" and "versus".
This is a perfect illustration of why we need consistent tagging standards that are used by record companies (for downloads), music databases (for ripping CDs), tagging software, music servers and control points.
When I get a chance, I'll create a page on the MinimServer website describing the tagging standards that MinimServer uses. Until I read this Jaikoz thread, I thought this would be obvious, but I see now that it isn't.

I would find that very helpful, Simon. Thanks.

What do I enter for 'Value' and 'Field'? I have used %orchestra% for both.

Thats correct. You could also call it "Ensemble" which is a bid wider definition and would then also take, String quartets, choruses, chamber ensembles, etc etc

Good point, and one that I had been mulling over myself.
Of course, having a separate Orchestra/Ensemble tag would mean that the Artist field would be blank for any music without a soloist, including most orchestral and much chamber music. Is there any reason why it is advisable or good practice that Artist should always have a value?
