Yes, this is strongly recommended.

Yes, this is strongly recommended.

Should I also install MimimServer on my Mac? (Yes, I did read instructions, but it's not clear to me. Music files are stored on my Synology NAS).

No. The general rule is that MinimServer is installed on the device where the music files are kept, and MinimWatch is installed on the device used to control MinimServer if that is different.

If you had music files stored on your Mac, you would then need MinimServer on the Mac to serve those files. You can run different copies of MinimServer on different devices on the same network, but you can't (yet) run multiple instances of MinimServer on the same device.

By way of example, I have separate but identical copies of my music library on my PC and on my NAS (so as to maintain a backup). I run MinimServer on the NAS for normal listening, and control it from MinimWatch on the PC. I also have MinimServer installed on the PC to access the copy of the library on the PC, mainly for test purposes, as I do all the ripping and tagging on the PC.

I hope that this explains things.

I have tried to explain this in the opening paragraphs of this page and this page. Can you point to the parts that aren't clear so that I can improve them? Many thanks!
I have a DS212+ and have DSM version DSM 5.2-5592 Update 4
I previously had Java installed but uninstalled it as it was outdated. I have carefully gone through your guide and uploaded ejdk-8u51-linux-arm-sflt.tar.gz to the public folder and given permission to http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk as explained. But Java simply doesnt appear on the package central.
Please help.
Thanks
Steve

Did you go to the Community tab of the Package Center and look for Java there?
Hey there,

Im having troubles trying to upload the *.gz file to the public folder...
Maybe it's too late and i should try this tomorrow with a clean mind. Smile

Have the diskstation webpage opened, but drag'n'drop doesn't work, how can i upload the file in order to install java?
Sorry for the dumb question.

See this page for instructions.
New user here, and I'm having trouble finding the correct Java version for ARMv5.
It looks like the installer is expecting the 8u51 package, but the only ones available from Oracle are 8u33 and 8u65; 8u51 doesn't show up in the previous versions section. I tried to force install 8u65, but then MinimSerever complains that it can't find the 8u51 version.

Any suggestions, or do I just have to wait until everyone catches up with Oracle?
OK, at the moment the correct package seems to be available here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/cn/jav...1-zhs.html

Hopefully this will help others until everything gets updated to the latest Java version. It looks like 8u51 has security issues, so hopefully the need for this will be short lived.
