Hello everybody,

I use minimserver and streamer on a QNAP TS251. In fact I have 2 minimservers that can run on this NAS :
>> 1 minimserver on a virtual machine (Vortexbox)
>> 1 minimserver on the OS of the QNAP itself

My streamer (Belcanto refstream) and my DAC (Totaldac D1 Dual) can play native DSF files.

In my minimstreamer settings i only have "flac:wav" set and nothing concerning DSF, meaning that I should be able to read DSF natively.

But when I use minimserver on the Vortexbox, the DAC is showing a 176kHz signal and when I use the minimserver on the Qnap I can see "DSD" on my DAC.

Parameters in minimwatch are strictly the same....

Any idea how I can play native DSF files on the minimserver installed on the Vortexbox Virtual Machine ?

Thanks for your support.

PS : if you ask why I play minimserver on a vortexbox in a VM environment : strangely is is much more better sound than on minimserver installed on the QNAP itself.

I can't think of any reason why running MinimServer in a VM would make a difference to what it sends to the streamer.

The first step is to check what the VM instance of MinimServer is sending to your streamer. Please produce a debug log by doing the following:

1) From the correct minim icon for the VM instance of MinimServer, select 'Show log'
2) In the log window, set the logging level to Debug
3) In the log window, click Clear
4) Leave the log window open
5) Play a DSF file and stop playback after a few seconds
6) In the log window, click 'Save as' to save a log file
7) In the log window, set the logging level back to Info
8) Zip the log file that was created by step 6 and attach it to a post here
Hello, i can fully understand that i could be very strange. It is like the Properties could not be applied through minimwatch especially when dealing with minimstreamer.

If there really is a difference, it must be because some mistake or bug causes some part of the chain to do something wrong, maybe causing a suboptimal transcoding choice.

The only way to determine if there really is an audible difference (unless the error is glaring like bad dist or large droputs) is double-blind listening tests, maybe facilitated by ABXswitching.
Thanks for your advise but it is not the purpose of my request.

Thanks for the quick response. This log confirms that the properties have been applied correctly and MinimSever is sending the stream to the renderer 192.168.1.40 in native DSF format.

Does this IP address represent the Belcanto REFStream? If so, it looks like the REFStream is doing something to modify the stream before sending it to the DAC.

Does the stream play OK on the DAC?
