I have searched for multiTag in the forum and read through the posts but I cannot get it to work for the Genre tag.
With Twonky if I use the following Genre Tag: Rock,Rock Country,Rock Psychedelic,Rock West Coast
for the Grateful Dead (hi all deadheads), then I get the album appearing under Rock, Rock Country, Rock Psychedelic & Rock West Coast and NOT the full entry. That is what I understand as multiTag but of course it might not be.
Does that make sense?

Now MinimServer has vastly better search facilities and I do mean vastly better than Twocky, there is simply no comparison. But it doesn't do this trick that Twonky does with multiple tags.

Twonky is OK for non-classical fans but apart from being a deadhead I am also a big classical fan - about 70% of my digital and LP collection is classical and Twonky is just about hopeless for classical collections.
Minim, though is perfect for classical fans with its 'Intelligent Browsing' facility and to be honest the multiple items in the Genre tag is not that much of an issue, certainly not as much as it is in Twonky where it is vital because the rest is so awful!
Now in the Index Tags field I changed Genre to Genre.display.multiTag but it doesn't work. Genre just disappears from the search fields in the NAIM n-Stream app.

So where should I put it? Is a comma the default separator?

Simon I have to say that I love Minim, it is a brilliant piece of work and I have been studying a few music servers, so I do know the field. I will carry on using Twonky (probably) for pictures via my WD Live Hub but not for music through my NAIM any more.

The multiTag setting does something different from what you are expecting. It affects how multiple tag values are sent to the control point, not how multiple tag values are read by MinimServer.

MinimServer supports multiple tag values for Genre, Artist and almost all other tags. To do this, you need to use a tagging program that can write multiple tag values into the file. MinimServer doesn't provide a separator for multiple values because this would be contrary to the standard tagging specifications. Most tagging programs provide a separator which you can use to write multiple values into the file. Which tagging program are you using?
Thanks for that Simon.
I will redo my Genre tags to be more informative. As I said before, in your software there is much less of a need for this functionality anyway, so it is really no big deal. In fact the more I use your server then the better it gets. I have created a "Classification" tab which will hold one of the following vakues: Classical, Folk, Jazz, Pop or Rock and clicking this tab will be my first port of call during a session.
Cheers!
Hi Simon,
If I could come in here please as it is somewhat related to my problem. I have always had problems with multiple genre tags and never had them working. The issue has now become more important.

I used to use linux version of EasyTag and tried // (or was it \\) as delimiter and this didn't work, at that time with Twonky. Now I only use Minimserver which continues to be the best.
For tagging I gave up on EasyTag as it didn't work correctly with .m4a files and am now using PuddleTag.

Do you know what is the correct de-limiter which works with Minimserver so I can for example set genre as both Oratorio and Liturgical and have the work appear when I browse for either of those genres.

I believe PuddleTag uses \\ as the separator for multiple tag values (like Mp3tag). You might need to use a "split" setting in PuddleTag as well as this separator. I'm sure the author of PuddleTag will be able to explain exactly what's needed.

Hi Simon,
Many thanks. Will try again!

Hi Simon,
Just come across a problem with minimserver while trying to sort out the genre tagging. I re-tagged one work (The Messiah) as Oratorio\\Liturgical and uploaded to NAS. I then used minimwatch (on windoze machine) to restart minimserver. The restart was very fast and the Messiah album was visible on my control point (bubble ds) but the re-tagged files were shown as ?moved or missing? or words to that effect.
I restored the tags to Oratorio only and repeated the process but tracks were still not visible. The only way I could get the tracks to show was to re-start minimserver using the NAS control page.
Am I doing something wrong here?

To see new or changed music, you need to use Rescan in MinimWatch, not Restart. This is a change in 0.8.1.

MP3Tag uses '\\' to mark the split between multiple tags in a single text box, but does not automatically split tags at this marker if it is inserted. [EDIT: This is incorrect; see my correction in Post #13.] To split a tag you can use the Quick Action 'Split field by separator' where the separator used is whatever you specify.

Also, dBpoweramp will automatically split fields at any semicolon. This can be useful, but can also be the source of inadvertent errors; I have found no way to switch off this behaviour.

Hi Simon,
Many thanks. Although Minimserver had been updated the version of Minimwatch on windoze machine I used was pre auto-update and didn't have Rescan option. Now sorted. Many thanks.
Also I used the \\ delimiter in PuddleTag and it seems to have worked so I guess the split setting is correct. I shall now try a few more tag edits. Fingers crossed.
