Onkyo CR-N765
Dear all,
I've just bought this AV receiver, using the Onkyo remote control app, but I can find the minimserver only in DLAN, which cannot stream DSD files. How can I set the protocol to SMB in minimserver? (I've activated the SMB in control panel of my Synology DS 218+) Thank you very much. |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
MinimServer cannot stream files to a renderer using the SMB protocol. This protocol is used for accessing shared folders, not for streaming from UPnP servers such as MinimServer.

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
Hi Ray
Not sure why you think your Onkyo CR-N765 requires to access the DSD files via the SMB - the Onkyo does not even support SMB! The CR-N765 can only access audio files over the network, including DSD files, via a UPnP/DLNA media server such as MinimServer. That is why you have the 'DLNA' option in the Onkyo Remote app. From the Onkyo CR-N765's Instruction Manual: "The unit allows you to use DLNA to play music files stored on a PC or a hard disk connected to your home network (NAS device). - You must connect the unit and PC or NAS to the same router. - You can play music files on a NAS device provided with a DLNA server function or a PC installed with a player provided with a DLNA server function" "File Formats USB and Networks This unit can play the following types of audio files over a USB or network connection. . . . DSD - Extension .dsf, .DSF - Sampling Frequency 2.8224 M/5.6448 MHz" So you should not be having any problems getting the CR-N765 to stream & play .dsf DSD files stored on the Synology NAS provided by MinimServer. However it looks like the Onkyo does not support .dff DSD files. Which DSD file types do you have? .dff or .dsf |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
Dear all,
Thank you for your help!! Actually I can play my music files (FLAC, WAV..) using MinimServer thru' DLNA. However, the player skip all DSF files (DSD64, 2.8224MHz), those files can be played when copied into a USB memory and plug in the front USB port. |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
Ah that's unfortunate, though strange since the Onkyo's instruction manual does say that it is supposed to be able to play .dsf files from the network (ie, via UPnP/DLNA) as well as from a USB storage device.
Thinking about it there could be another explanation. It's possible the Onkyo CR-N765 is expecting an incorrect MIME type for .dsf DSD files, whereas MinimServer is sending the correct MIME type for .dsf files and the Onkyo doesn't recognise it so cannot play the files. This has been reported before for another Onkyo network streaming device. See this thread & associated posts: http://forum1613.minimserver.com/showthr...3#pid22263 |

This has been reported before for another Onkyo network streaming device. See this thread & associated posts: I think this is the correct explanation. The waters are very muddy around what is the "correct" MIME type for DSD. IANA's current position is that the x- prefix is no longer required for unregistered MIME types. As no-one has registered a MIME type for DSD, media servers and renderers are choosing MIME types from any of the following: audio/dsd audio/dsf audio/dff audio/x-dsd audio/x-dsf audio/x-dff This is very unsatisfactory as it isn't possible for a server to support multiple MIME types for the same stream. It would be fairly simple for control points and renderers to do this, but in practice they seem to support only one MIME type, which might not be compatible with what the server has chosen. |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
Simon,
With regards IANA's current position on the use of the x- prefex, does that mean you are now considering allowing the user to alter the MIME types being used by MinimServer? |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
I am considering this but it isn't a good solution because it doesn't work if the user has multiple renderers that require different MIME types. It is better for the renderer to accept multiple MIME types, which should be a trivial change and enables the renderer to work with all servers. Before I make any changes to MinimServer, I will check what MIME types other servers are sending for DSF and DFF files.

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
I checked how Asset UPnP and J River handle this. Both of these use audio/x-dsf and audio/x-dff by default, with the option to change this by editing a configuration file.
It seems that audio/x-dsf and audio/x-dff are becoming the de facto standard for UPnP servers. This is good news and should hopefully encourage renderer manufacturers to support these MIME types for non-DoP DSD streaming. |

RE: Onkyo CR-N765
MinimServer update 124 (available now for manual update) enables the user to set custom MIME types for DSF and DFF files. See this section for more information about this update.
