Showing the discs of a multidisc album

Showing the discs of a multidisc album
At present, MinimServer shows the discs of a multidisc album in any of the following cases:

1) The album contains a DISCSUBTITLE tag in at least one of its files

2) The album name is tagged with a special suffix of the form "[disc n]", "(disc n)" or ", disc n"

3) The album name is tagged with a special suffix of the form "[disc n subtitle]", "(disc n subtitle)" or ", disc n subtitle"

If none of these options is used, the disc contents are merged into a consecutive list of tracks.

All the above options for showing the discs require some special tagging of the album's files. As an additional option, I am considering adding a new configuration property or option that would make MinimServer show the discs of all multidisc albums even if special tagging is not used.

I am also considering adding a new configuration property or option that would change the current view of a multidisc album (show all tracks at the top level with a section heading at the start of each disc) to an alternative view (show only the discs at the top level and require each disc to be opened to see its tracks).

What do people think about these ideas?

RE: Showing the discs of a multidisc album
Simon,
Re your first suggestion, what would be the trigger, the disc numbering, so that if the discs are numbered 1/3, 2/3, etc., they would show as a multi-disc album? If that’s the plan, I think that would be a great feature. As for the second idea, I think I would prefer the way it currently works. Having to click through on the individual disc to see the track list, for me at least, would just mean an extra unnecessary action.

Thanks for the continuing efforts to improve what is already the best server.

RE: Showing the discs of a multidisc album
On the first suggestion, and from experience with how Asset does this, it would be a good idea but I have found it is dependent on the disc number being of the form n/N, rather than just n. If it could be clever enough to append a Disc n on the first album that is only tagged n it would good - Asset for eg. only appends the Disc n for disc numbers greater than 1 in this case, so you get "Album", "Album, Disc 2", "Album, Disc 3" etc. A bit messy.

On the second - if it's only an option I see no harm, but if the separate discs are shown as an album cover rather than the >> "Disc subtitle" form it would be nicer.

Thanks for this feedback. MinimServer dosn't do anything different if the DISCNUMBER tag is n/N instead of n. Does Asset treat these differently?

The alternative view for the second option would show artwork for each disc and it would be possible for each disc to have different artwork.

The proposal is to makes the new property or option work for both styles of DISCNUMBER. MinimServer doesn't treat a DISCNUMBER value of 1/3, 2/3 any differently from 1, 2. Do you use these different disc numbering styles in your library for different kinds of albums?

I have Asset configured not to combine multi-disc albums but to show them as "Album, Disc x". But it only does that for disc 1 of an album if it's of the form 1/N, otherwise it assumes (probably) it's a single disc album and doesn't append the "Disc 1" to it.
I think this is what you were suggesting to add to Minim as an option so that the tagging and naming doesn't need to match one of those rules you mention to show them separately? In which case it would be neat if it could handle such cases better. In fact most of my albums are now tagged n/N for discnumber but this was not always the case (and I seem to remember there's even an option in dBPoweramp to strip out the "/N").

For the second option with the disc album art, that would be great. But could it also show the discsubtitle as the text rather than albumname? Otherwise each entry will look the same if the art's the same. Obviously they'd be in discnumber order but all the same...
Or is that control point dependent?

There is a difference between MinimServer recognising that an album is multidisc and the way it displays a multidisc album (either with or without disc information). I am not proposing any change to how MinimServer recognises that an album is multidisc. I am proposing a change to the way MinimServer decides how to display a multidisc album (either with or without disc information).

The text for each of the discs in the new alternative view would be the same as currently, i.e., the discsubtitle if present and "Disc n" otherwise.

I just wanted to make sure you mean what appears as the disc "separator" on the full album view and what the "Title" shows when you select the >>, will appear under the album art in the alternative view, rather than the album title which it currently shows.

Currently:

Are you proposing this mashed up example?:

Simon, Im slightly confused now as I thought it was the opposite. i.e currently you need to have DISCNUMBER and either DISCSUBTITLE or Disc in Album name in order to trigger it to display as multiple discs rather than one contiguous disc.

I thought the changes was so that you would just need DISCNUMBER set and the new option enabled in order to display as multidisc. If you had DISCSUBTITLE set that would be displayed above each disc, but it would not be required in order to display as multiple discs rather than one disc.

@paultaylor: You are correct. Please read my comment again as it is not saying anything different from what you have said.
