Running MinimServer on a plug computer
One of my goals when developing MinimServer was to be able to run it on a silent low-power device. I chose the SheevaPlug because it's fanless and silent, uses only 5W of power, and has a USB port for attaching a hard drive containing my music collection.
As I write this, I'm listening to music using a SheevaPlug running MinimServer on Debian Linux ARM. My music collection is on a USB-attached 2.5 inch 320GB Hitachi single-platter hard drive that's completely silent unless I put my ear a couple of inches away. The hard drive spins down automatically when not in use to save power. The total cost was about GBP 150 and I'm extremely pleased with it. |

This looks like a great setup and as my Buffalo NAS has just decided to depart itself, I'm interested. Do you get Linux onto the SheevaPlug via telnet, if not how? How much Linux do you need to know? In your search for a near silent HD did you find any with larger capacity that you would have been happy with - I think I want 1TB or 2TB. Thanks Alan |

Thanks Alan I bought the multiboot version of the SheevaPlug (see this page) with a 4GB SD card preloaded with Debian wheezy. Setting it up to run MinimServer and formatting and mounting the external drive wasn't too difficult—as long as you know the basics of Linux, you'll be fine. I chose this 2.5 inch HDD because it can be powered from the SheevaPlug's USB port, thus achieving my low power goal. The 320GB Hitachi drive that I bought has a single platter (most 2.5 inch drives have 2 platters) and had better reviews than their 500GB single platter model. I've had previous good experience with Hitachi drives, and I've also been pleased with this purchase. From a bit of searching just now, I see there's a 1TB Samsung 2.5 inch 2-platter drive, but I haven't checked its power consumption. The power supply in the SheevaPlug doesn't like too much power draw, so you need to be careful (or use an external power supply). If you want 2TB, you'll need an externally powered 3.5 inch HDD. |

RE: Running MinimServer on a plug computer
I'd like to run MinimServer on my SheevaPlug UBIFS Dev Kit (with Debian Squeeze 6.0).
My goal is just to make a silent low-power media server (with an external 2,5" USB drive) for my Linn DS. Someone can help me to install and configure it? Thanks a lot. Regards, Alberto. |

RE: Running MinimServer on a plug computer
Hi Simon, would this also work on a Raspberry Pi? Cheers, Rene

RE: Running MinimServer on a plug computer
Hi Simon,
I got Java and Minim installed on a Sheevaplug today. The installation as such is working fine. Only question: As I do not intend (for now) to add a disk directly to the Sheeva via USB, would it be possible to point he Plug Computer to a network drive that holds my music files? So far I failed doing this. Many thanks bbrip |
