I indeed saw jawaw.exe briefly appear and then disappear

OK, I think I know what's happening. This problem can be caused by not completely removing all the previous 0.72 MinimWatch jar files when 0.8.1 was installed. This can happen if you didn't exit MinimWatch 0.72 before installing MinimWatch 0.8.1. To fix it, do the following:

1) Uninstall MinimWatch 0.8.1
2) Delete all the files in the C:\Program Files\MinimWatch\lib folder
3) Reinstall MinimWatch 0.8.1

This was a new install and I had not installed 0.72 before. I nevertheless did as you said but no changes. MinimWatch still does not load.

RE: minimwatch not loading
Thanks to your hint, I found that there were log files in the lib folder.
Here is what the log says (this is just the beginning; the content of the log is much larger):

A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# EXCEPTION_UNCAUGHT_CXX_EXCEPTION (0xe06d7363) at pc=0x7c812fd3, pid=672, tid=1524

# Java VM: Java HotSpot™ Client VM (24.45-b08 mixed mode, sharing windows-x86 )
# Problematic frame:
# C [kernel32.dll+0x12fd3] RaiseException+0x52
#
# Failed to write core dump. Minidumps are not enabled by default on client versions of Windows

Please also check the folder

C:\Users\<your-user-name>\AppData\Roaming\MinimWatch\data

to see if there are any log files there. The AppData folder is hidden by Explorer, so you need to type the full path into the Explorer address bar.

If you find any log files there, please upload them to my FTP server. Thanks!

Thanks. There was one small log without much content in it.
I'll upload it as soon as I get the FTP address.
Thanks for all your help.

Just for the record: problem solved by stopping DSSP and UpnP services in WinXP
